Almost every guest I drive asks about Ubud before anything else. Rice terraces, water temples, monkeys, the palace. It is the picture of Bali most people carry in their heads before they land.
The problem is that most people stay in Seminyak, Canggu or Nusa Dua, and Ubud is not next door. An Ubud day trip from the south can be one of the best days of your holiday, or a long day in the car with a few rushed photos. The difference is almost always the order of the stops and what time you leave.
Here is how I plan an Ubud day trip for guests, the stops I think are worth it, and a route that works with real Bali traffic.
Why An Ubud Day Trip Needs A Plan
From Seminyak or Canggu, Ubud is about 1 to 1.5 hours in the morning and can be 2 hours or more coming back in the late afternoon. From Nusa Dua or Uluwatu, add another 30 minutes. If you want the full picture, I wrote about how long it really takes to get around Bali.
That means around 3 hours of your day is driving no matter what. The way to make it worth it is simple: leave early, see the popular places first, and keep the relaxed stops for the afternoon. Tegallalang at 8am and Tegallalang at 11am are two very different experiences.
The Best Stops On An Ubud Day Trip
You will not fit all of these into one day, and you should not try. Pick five or six. I have put them roughly in the order they sit along the road from the south.
Celuk And Mas Craft Villages
On the way up from the south you pass through Celuk, known for silver, and Mas, known for wood carving. Families here have done this work for generations. A short stop to watch the carvers is a nice way to start the day while the rest of Ubud is still waking up. There is no pressure to buy, and if you do, prices are better than in the tourist shops of Seminyak.
Tegenungan Waterfall
The easiest waterfall to reach from the south, only about 20 minutes before Ubud town. It is wide and powerful, especially in the rainy season. There are a lot of steps down and back up, so wear shoes with grip. Go early if you want to swim or take photos without a crowd behind you.
Tegallalang Rice Terrace
The most famous rice terrace in Bali and yes, it is worth it. The layers of green going down into the valley are beautiful in person. By mid-morning the tour buses arrive, so I try to get guests here before 9am. You can walk down into the terraces, and some farmers ask for a small donation to cross their section. That is normal. The money goes to the people who keep the terraces alive.
Tirta Empul Water Temple
A holy spring temple where Balinese people come to purify themselves. Visitors can join the ritual in the pools, moving from fountain to fountain in a set order. I always explain the order and the meaning before we go in, because it is a real ceremony and not a photo spot. Sarongs are provided at the entrance, but bring a change of clothes if you plan to go into the water. Read the Bali temple dress code guide before you visit.
Gunung Kawi Sebatu
A quieter water temple close to Tegallalang with koi ponds, gardens and very few people. If Tirta Empul feels too busy, this is my favourite alternative. Many of my guests say it was the most peaceful place of their whole trip.
Sacred Monkey Forest Sanctuary
Right in the middle of Ubud town, a forest with old temples and several hundred long-tailed macaques. It is fun, but please take it seriously. Put sunglasses, hats and anything loose in your bag, do not bring food, and do not look the monkeys straight in the eye. Early afternoon is usually calmer than the morning.
Ubud Palace And Ubud Art Market
The palace sits across the road from the market, so you see both in one short walk. The palace is small but beautiful, and the art market is good for sarongs, baskets and souvenirs. Bargaining is expected. Start at around half the first price and meet in the middle with a smile.
Campuhan Ridge Walk
An easy paved walk along a green ridge between two rivers, about 30 to 45 minutes there and back. It is best in the late afternoon when the light gets soft, or very early in the morning. A good way to end the day with some quiet before the drive home.
A Sample Ubud Day Trip Route From Seminyak Or Canggu
This is the route I suggest most often for first-time visitors. It avoids doubling back and puts each stop at its best time of day.

If you only have a half day, keep Tegallalang and one temple, and skip the rest. If you are staying more than one night in Bali, it is worth looking at the 3 day Bali itinerary too, which gives Ubud a full day on its own.
Adding An Activity To Your Ubud Day
The area around Ubud is also where most of Bali’s adventure activities are. You can swap two of the stops above for one of these:
- Bali Swing, the jungle swing over the valley near Tegallalang
- White water rafting on the Ayung River, about 2 hours on the water
- ATV ride through rice fields, villages and mud
- River tubing, a slower and more relaxed option than rafting
If you add rafting or an ATV ride, drop the waterfall and the art market. Otherwise the day gets too long and you spend it looking at your watch.
What To Bring
- A sarong and sash, or clothes that cover your shoulders and knees for the temples
- Swimwear and a change of clothes if you plan to join the Tirta Empul ritual
- Comfortable shoes with grip for the waterfall and rice terrace steps
- Cash in small notes for entrance fees, donations and the market
- Sunscreen, a hat and a refillable water bottle
- A light rain jacket in the wet season, roughly November to March
How Much Does An Ubud Day Trip Cost?
With a private driver, an Ubud day trip is usually booked as a full day, 8 to 10 hours. In 2026 that is around IDR 650,000 to 900,000 per car, not per person, including fuel and parking. For a family or a group of friends, a private car often costs less than joining a group tour, and you choose when to leave each place.

Is one day enough for Ubud?
One day is enough to see the highlights if you start early. If you want slow mornings, yoga, cafes and a sunrise trek to Mount Batur, stay a few nights in Ubud instead.
What is the best time to leave for Ubud?
Leave at 7am from Seminyak or Canggu, and 6:30am from Nusa Dua or Uluwatu. You arrive before the crowds and before the heat.
Can we change the plan on the day?
Of course. That is the point of having your own driver. If you love a place, we stay longer. If it rains, I move the indoor stops or lunch into that window.
Is Ubud good for kids?
Yes. Kids usually love the Monkey Forest and the rice terraces. I would skip the long waterfall stairs with small children and keep the day a little shorter.
