If you ask me for one evening in Bali that people never forget, I will say the Uluwatu sunset. A temple on the edge of a 70 metre cliff, the Indian Ocean below, and a fire dance while the sun goes down behind the dancers.
However, an Uluwatu sunset trip is also the easiest one to get wrong. Most people arrive at 5:30pm with everyone else, then spend the golden hour in a car park queue. So here is how I plan the afternoon for my guests, what to see before the temple, and how to get a good seat for the Kecak dance.
Why Timing Matters For An Uluwatu Sunset
Uluwatu sits at the very bottom of the Bukit Peninsula, and there is only one main road in and out. As a result, the traffic builds quickly from about 4pm, when every tour heads to the same place at the same time.
From Seminyak the drive is usually 1 to 1.5 hours in the afternoon. From Canggu, allow closer to 1.5 to 2 hours. Meanwhile, from Nusa Dua or Jimbaran it is only 30 to 40 minutes. If you want the full picture, read how long it really takes to get around Bali.
My rule is simple. Be at the temple by 4pm. That way you walk the cliff path before the crowd, and then you still have time to buy your dance ticket without stress.
What To See On An Uluwatu Sunset Trip
An Uluwatu sunset trip works best as a relaxed afternoon, not a race. Choose one or two stops before the temple, and then let the evening take its time.
Uluwatu Temple
Pura Luhur Uluwatu is one of the six most important temples in Bali. It guards the island from the spirits of the sea, which is also why it sits right on the cliff edge. Visitors cannot enter the inner temple, because it is for prayer only. Still, the walk along the cliff wall on both sides gives you the best views in the south.

The Kecak Fire Dance
The Kecak dance tells a part of the Ramayana story. About 50 men sit in circles and chant “cak cak cak” instead of using any music. Then, as the sky turns orange, the story ends with a fire scene in the middle of the stage.
The show usually starts around 6pm and lasts about an hour. Tickets are sold at the counter near the amphitheatre, and in high season they can run out. Therefore, I always recommend buying them as soon as you arrive. For the best photos, sit on the upper rows facing the ocean, so the sunset is behind the dancers.
Melasti Beach
Before the temple, Melasti is the easiest beach in the area. You can drive almost to the sand, unlike most Bukit beaches with long staircases. The water is clear, the sand is white, and the limestone cliffs on the road down are a photo stop on their own.
Padang Padang And Suluban Beach
Padang Padang is smaller and busier, but it has more character. You reach it through a narrow gap in the rocks. On the other hand, Suluban, also called Blue Point, sits in a hidden cove between caves under the cliffs. It is best at low tide, so ask me to check the tide the day before.
Garuda Wisnu Kencana (GWK)
On the way down you pass GWK, a cultural park with one of the tallest statues in the world. It is worth a stop if you have kids or if you like big architecture. However, if time is short, I would skip it and spend longer at the beach.
A Sample Uluwatu Sunset Itinerary From Seminyak
This is the plan I suggest most often. It avoids the worst traffic, and it also keeps the afternoon relaxed.

If you stay in Nusa Dua or Jimbaran, you can start two hours later. Also, if you only want the temple and the dance, a half day booking is enough. For a longer trip, the 3 day Bali itinerary uses this same plan as its last day.
Dinner After The Sunset
After the dance, most guests are hungry, and the obvious choice is Jimbaran Bay. There, restaurants set tables on the sand, and you choose your fish, prawns or squid from the ice and pay by weight. Because it is only 25 minutes from the temple, it fits perfectly into the evening.
Alternatively, if you prefer a cliff bar instead, Single Fin and the cafes around Uluwatu are good for a drink with the surfers. I will happily wait while you eat, since that is part of the day.
Tips For Your Uluwatu Sunset Trip
- Watch the monkeys. Uluwatu monkeys are famous for stealing sunglasses, hats and phones. So put everything loose inside your bag before you walk the cliff path.
- Bring cash. Entrance and Kecak tickets are usually paid at the counter, and small warungs rarely take cards.
- Wear comfortable shoes. The cliff path has steps, and the beaches often have long staircases.
- Bring a light jacket. The wind on the cliff can feel cool after sunset, especially from June to September.
- Check the weather. In the rainy season, roughly November to March, clouds sometimes hide the sunset. Even then, the dance is still worth it.
How Much Does An Uluwatu Sunset Trip Cost?
With a private driver, most guests book a half day or a short full day, depending on where they stay. In 2026 a half day of 4 to 6 hours is usually IDR 350,000 to 550,000 per car, not per person. Uluwatu Sunset FAQ
What time is sunset in Uluwatu?
Sunset in Bali is between about 6pm and 6:40pm all year, because the island is close to the equator. Therefore, the Kecak show times stay almost the same in every season.
Is the Kecak dance suitable for kids?
Yes. Kids usually love the fire and the chanting. However, the seats are stone benches with no backs, so bring a small cushion or a sarong to sit on.
Can I combine Uluwatu with another area on the same day?
You can, for example with a morning in Ubud, but it makes for a very long day. Instead, I usually suggest pairing Uluwatu with the beaches nearby and keeping Ubud for its own Ubud day trip.
