The most common message I get starts the same way. Someone has three quotes in front of them, the numbers are all different, and they have no idea which one is fair.
I understand the confusion. Driver pricing in Bali is not regulated and nobody publishes a standard rate. Two drivers can quote the same day and be IDR 300,000 apart, and neither of them is cheating you. They have simply included different things.
So here is the honest version, written by someone on the other side of the quote. What a day actually costs in 2026, what should be included, and what to ask before you agree to anything.
What A Private Driver In Bali Costs In 2026
These are the ranges you will see across the island this year. All prices are per car, not per person, which is the first thing to understand. Four people pay the same as one.

If a quote lands well inside these ranges, it is a normal price. If it is far below, that is not automatically a scam, but it does mean something has been left out and you should ask what.
What Should Be Included
A standard full day rate almost always covers:
- The car and the fuel
- The driver for the agreed hours
- Normal parking fees at the places you visit
- The driver’s own meals
That last one surprises people. You do not need to buy your driver lunch. It is built into the rate. If you want to invite him to eat with you it is a kind gesture, but it is never expected and no driver should imply otherwise.
What Is Usually Not Included
This is where quotes diverge, and where most misunderstandings happen.
- Entrance fees. Every temple, waterfall and rice terrace charges its own. These add up over a day and are almost never in the driver’s price.
- Your own meals and drinks.
- Activity tickets. Rafting, ATV, swings and boat trips are booked separately, whether the driver arranges them or you do.
- Trekking or temple guides. Mount Batur and Sekumpul both require a local guide, and that is a separate cost.
- Tolls. Small, around IDR 13,000 on the airport road.
- Driver accommodation on multi-day trips where he stays overnight away from home. Usually IDR 150,000 to 250,000 for a simple guesthouse.
None of this is hidden or unusual. It only becomes a problem when nobody mentions it until the end of the day. Ask for the list up front and the whole thing stops being stressful.
Why Quotes Differ So Much
Distance. A day around Ubud and a day driving to Sekumpul and back are not the same job. The second one is six hours of driving and a lot more fuel.
Vehicle. An Avanza and an Alphard cost very different amounts to run. Most guests are fine in a standard car. If you have six people and luggage, you need the bigger van and it costs more.
Hours. Some quotes are for eight hours, some for twelve. A cheaper rate for fewer hours is not cheaper if your day runs long.
Who is quoting. An agency takes a cut and passes the rest to a driver. A driver quoting directly keeps it. That is why direct booking is often better value, and also why the driver you meet on an agency booking may not be the one in the photos.
Season. July, August and the end of December are busy. Rates firm up and good drivers book out weeks ahead.
When A Cheap Quote Is A Warning
I am not going to tell you that cheap always means bad. Plenty of good drivers charge at the lower end, especially for short days close to home.
But if a full day quote is under IDR 500,000, something is being covered another way. Usually one of these:
- Commission stops. The route includes a coffee plantation, a silver workshop and a sarong shop where the driver earns a percentage. Your day becomes a shopping trip.
- Fuel or parking added later. The quote covered the driver only.
- A tight hour limit with overtime charged from hour eight.
- Someone else driving. The price was quoted by one person and subcontracted to whoever was free.
The commission stop is the most common and the most annoying. You lose two hours of your day standing in shops you did not choose. Ask directly: are there any stops in the plan where you earn commission? An honest driver will answer plainly.
Is A Private Driver Worth It Compared To Grab Or A Scooter?
Grab and Gojek work well for short hops inside one area. For a multi-stop day they fall apart. No driver will wait two hours at a waterfall, pickup is restricted in some areas, and surge pricing during traffic closes the gap on a day rate quickly. Four separate rides across a sightseeing day often cost more than hiring one car.
A scooter is cheap, fun, and genuinely good for getting around Canggu or Ubud town. For crossing the island it is a different proposition. Long distances in heat and rain are hard, the roads are busier than most visitors expect, and you need a valid international licence for your insurance to mean anything.
A private driver makes sense when you are doing three or four stops in a day, travelling with kids or parents, carrying luggage, or simply want to look out of the window instead of at a map. For a couple, a full day works out around USD 20 to 28 each. For a family of four it is the cheapest option on the island.
Tipping
Not required, always appreciated. The common practice is around ten percent of the day rate for a good day, so IDR 50,000 to 100,000 on a standard booking. Round up to the nearest 50,000 to keep it simple.
Give it directly to the driver at the end, and on a multi-day trip give it on the last day rather than every evening.
Questions To Ask Before You Book
Five questions will tell you everything you need to know about a quote:
- How many hours does this cover, and what is the overtime rate?
- Does the price include fuel and parking?
- What is not included?
- Are there any commission stops in the route?
- Will you be the one driving?
Any driver who answers all five clearly is someone you can book with confidence. Any driver who gets vague on question three or five is telling you something.
Common Questions
Is the price per person or per car?
Per car. This is why a private driver gets better value the more people you are, and why it beats per-person tours for families.
Should I pay a deposit?
Most independent drivers do not ask for one. Payment in cash at the end of the day is normal. Be cautious with anyone demanding full payment well before the trip.
Can I pay in Australian or US dollars?
Some drivers accept it, but the exchange rate you get will be worse than paying in rupiah. Withdraw cash locally and pay in IDR.
How far ahead should I book?
In quiet months a day or two is enough. In July, August and late December, book two to three weeks ahead for specific dates.
Do I pay extra for an early start or a late finish?
Sunrise trips up Mount Batur usually carry a small surcharge because they start around 1am. Ask when you plan it rather than assuming either way.
What about a multi-day trip around the island?
Normal and usually good value. You pay a day rate for each day, plus the driver’s accommodation on nights spent away from home. Agree the whole thing in writing before you start.

Prices are per car, one way, and the same in both directions. Drive times are honest estimates, not promises, because Bali traffic decides. Dollar amounts are a rough guide only.
For full day and half day hire, the price depends on where you want to go and how long we will be on the road, so I quote each day individually. Send me the plan and you will have a number before you commit to anything.
No commission stops, ever. If we stop at a coffee plantation it is because you wanted to, not because I get paid for it. And the person picking you up in the morning is me, not someone I passed the booking to.
