The cliff shaped like a dinosaur's head, and the photo most people come for. The viewpoint is easy. The climb down to the sand is steep, unshaded, and takes about an hour each way. Plenty of people turn back halfway, and that's fine.
A natural rock channel that fills with clear water at low tide. Only safe when the sea is calm, and swimming is a bad idea when swell is running. Your island driver will know the conditions that day.
A collapsed sea cave forming a round bay with a stone arch. Five minutes' walk from Angel's Billabong, so the two are always done together.
The easiest beach to actually swim at, with sand you can walk onto without a climb. Good for sunset if you're staying late.
On the east side, with a carved stairway down the cliff face. Photogenic, and quieter than Kelingking most mornings.
Next to Diamond Beach, in a bay ringed by rock stacks. The two pair well in one stop.
Manta rays feed here year round. The water can be choppy and the current strong, so it suits confident swimmers more than beginners.
Calmer water, good coral, better for families and first timers.
Nusa Penida is one of the best dive sites in Indonesia. Mola mola, the oceanic sunfish, appear roughly between July and October in cold water.
The standard day covers either the west side or the east side. Doing both in one day means rushing and a lot of driving on bad roads.
One day covers half the island, not all of it. East and west are far apart on slow roads. Pick one side and see it properly. If you want both, stay a night on the island.
The boat crossing can be rough. Between roughly December and March the sea is less predictable, and crossings occasionally get cancelled on short notice. If your flight home is the next day, don’t plan Nusa Penida for your last full day.
Kelingking is a real hike, not a viewpoint stroll. Wear proper shoes, bring water, and start early before the heat.
Roads on the island are narrow and steep. I don’t recommend renting a scooter there unless you’re experienced. Accidents are common and the nearest hospital is back on Bali.
It’s a long day. Expect to leave your hotel around 6am and be back by early evening. If you want a slower trip, a night on the island changes it completely.
