Mount Batur & Kintamani

Kintamani sits on the rim of an old caldera, looking down at Mount Batur and the lake behind it. It’s the coolest part of Bali most visitors reach, and in the early morning you’ll want a jacket. People come for two very different things here: some climb the volcano in the dark, others just want breakfast with that view. Both are worth doing. They’re not the same day, though, and it’s worth knowing which one you’re signing up for.

What To See

Mount Batur

An active volcano, still steaming in places, sitting inside a much larger crater left by an older eruption. The summit trek is the main draw, but the mountain looks just as good from the rim.

Lake Batur

Bali's largest lake, filling the eastern side of the caldera. The water is used for irrigation across a wide part of the island, and there are villages along the shore that see very few visitors.

Penelokan Viewpoint

The main lookout on the caldera rim. Restaurants line the road here, most with the same view. Mid morning is usually clearest before cloud builds up.

Toya Devasya And Batur Natural Hot Spring

Geothermal pools on the lake shore, heated by the volcano. Good after a sunrise trek when your legs are finished.

Trunyan Village

An old Balinese village across the lake, reached by boat, with burial customs unlike anywhere else on the island. Worth understanding before you go, and not for everyone.

Pura Ulun Danu Batur

A large temple on the rim, rebuilt higher up after the 1926 eruption buried the original. Quieter than the famous water temples.

Things To Do

Sunrise Trek To The Summit

Pickup around 2am, on the trail by 4am, at the top for sunrise. About two hours up, a little less down. A local trekking guide takes you from the base, and that part is not optional on this mountain.

Sunrise Jeep Tour

The 4WD version. Up onto the black lava field and the lower slopes without the climb. Suits anyone who wants the sunrise but not four hours on foot, and it's the better choice with kids or older parents.

Breakfast On The Rim

The simplest version. Leave at a normal hour, arrive mid morning, eat with the volcano in front of you. No alarm at 1am.

Coffee Plantation Stop

On the road between Ubud and Kintamani. Expect a tasting flight and a strong push to buy luwak coffee. Worth a stop, and you're free to skip the expensive part.

Cycling Down From Kintamani

Downhill most of the way, through villages and rice fields, back toward Ubud. Easy riding, and a good way to spend the second half of a sunrise day.

What I'd Tell You Before We Go

The trek is harder than the photos suggest. Loose volcanic gravel, steep in the last stretch, and done in the dark. Most reasonably fit people manage it. If you have knee trouble, take the jeep instead.Bring a jacket. It’s around 10 to 15 degrees at the summit before sunrise, and colder with wind. People underestimate this in Bali and regret it.Cloud is a real possibility. Some mornings the view is perfect, some mornings you’re inside a cloud. Nobody can promise which. June to September is the most reliable stretch. The day starts very early. For the trek, I’ll pick you up around 1 to 2am depending on where you’re staying. Plan a slow afternoon after, because most people sleep on the drive back.Guides at the base are required. The trail is not one to attempt alone, and the local guide association handles all climbs. That cost is separate from my driving.
